Visitors to the Netherlands are often struck by the impressive selection of canned meats available in Dutch supermarkets. But how do the Dutch enjoy their favourite tinned meat products? Below are three popular recipes, each serving four hungry people.
Broodje knakworst (Dutch hotdogs)
First bake the rolls according to the instructions on the packaging. Meanwhile, pour the Dutch sausages into a saucepan and warm gently on a low heat (do not boil, as they will lose their flavour). Slice open the rolls and fill each with two Dutch sausages. Finally, spoon over a tablespoon of mustard and your delicious hot lunch or typical Dutch snack is good to go!
Macaroni met Smac (macaroni with Dutch Spam)
First cook the macaroni according to instructions on the packaging, dissolve the noodle seasoning in some boiling water and cut the Dutch Spam into cubes. Next finely chop the onion and fry in a little butter until it starts to caramelise. Once the pasta is ready, stir in a knob of butter, as well as the noodle spices, fried onions, diced Smac, tomato paste and ketchup. Finally, warm the macaroni on a low heat and serve with a mixed salad.
Spaghetti met gehaktballen (spaghetti with Dutch meatballs)
First cook the spaghetti according to the instructions on the packaging. Meanwhile, pour the pasta sauce and tinned meatballs into separate pans and warm both on a low heat. Next, remove the meatballs from the pan, cut into quarters and place them into the saucepan containing the pasta sauce. Lastly divide the spaghetti among four plates and spoon over the pasta sauce. Serve with a fresh Italian salad. Yum!
