Surprisingly delicious savoury Sinterklaas recipes

Most regard the Dutch celebration of Sinterklaas as a time for seasonal sweet treats, such as taai taai (a chewy variety of ginger biscuit), chocolate letters and pepernoten (small ginger nut biscuits). But did you know that you can also rustle up a mouth-watering range of savoury Sinterklaas dishes, including the two exceptionally festive recipes below?

Savoury Sinterklaas recipes

Worstenbroodjes met speculaaskruiden en rozijnen (seasonal sausage rolls with speculaas spices and raisins)

Ingredients

8 sheets of puff pastry dough
200 grams of minced beef
2 teaspoons of Silvo biscuit & speculaas spices
2 tablespoons of raisins (chopped)
2 spring onions (finely sliced)
1 egg
Sesame seeds
Salt and pepper

Preparation

First preheat your oven to 180 C. Meanwhile heat a little butter or oil in a pan and briefly fry the minced beef. Next stir in the speculaas spices, spring onions and raisins, and season with salt and pepper. Now cut the puff pastry sheets in half, place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each, and then roll up into traditional sausage rolls. Next place the sausage rolls onto a baking tray (pre-lined with baking paper), brush with a little egg yolk and top with sesame seeds. Finally, bake your seasonal sausage rolls for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Perfect with drinks at Sinterklaas or Christmas parties!

Hartige sinterklaasletter (savoury Sinterklaas letter)

Ingredients

5 sheets of puff pastry dough
200 grams of minced beef
1 sachet of Silvo seasoning for minced meat
1 egg, beaten
A knob of butter

Preparation

First preheat your oven to 200 C and remove the puff pastry from the freezer in order to thaw. Meanwhile, place the meat, seasoning and half of the egg into a bowl and thoroughly mix. Now cut each of the puff pastry sheets in half until you have ten separate rectangular sheets of dough. Next place five of the puff pastry sheets onto a baking tray (pre-lined with baking paper) and arrange into a letter S shape. Now top the puff pastry with the meat mixture, cover with the remaining five sheets of puff pastry, press the edges firmly together and brush lightly with the rest of the beaten egg. Bake the savoury Sinterklaas letter for about 25 minutes or until golden brown, and serve immediately with fresh salad.
