Typical Dutch superfood recipes

Superfoods have become extremely popular in the Netherlands and are now available for purchase in almost all Dutch supermarkets. Many people buy superfoods because they believe them to be a great addition to a healthy and varied diet, but also because they’re incredibly delicious! Below is a tempting selection of typical Dutch recipes made using some of the best-loved superfoods in Holland: raw cacao powder, goji berries, hemp seeds and chia seeds.

hot chocolate made from raw cacao

Warme chocolademelk (hot chocolate)

In the Netherlands hot chocolate is normally reserved for the colder months. Yet this yummy hot drink has also been a favourite in tropical South American countries (where the cacao bean originated) for centuries. Simply place 1 cup of rice milk, 1 cup of water, 1 heaped tablespoon of raw cacao powder, ½ a teaspoon of cinnamon and 1 teaspoon of vanilla sugar into a saucepan and heat, taking care to constantly stir. As soon as the mixture starts to boil, pour the hot chocolate into two cups and drink immediately. Try serving with a topping of whipped cream lightly dusted with raw cacao powder …what could be more Dutch than that?

Muesli-ontbijt met gojibessen (muesli with goji berries)

Fancy giving your breakfast muesli an extra ‘kick’? Then stir in one or more tablespoons of goji berries – small, red, raisin-sized berries that boast an irresistibly sweet liquorice-like flavour! If you have time, try pre-soaking your goji berries overnight in lukewarm water. This is not essential however, as they’re every bit as tasty straight from the bag. You can also use goji berries to prepare a lovely cup of tea: chop the goji berries into small pieces, place into a mug, fill with boiling water, and allow the tea to steep for 5 minutes.

Hollandse koekjes met hennepzaad (Dutch biscuits with hemp seeds)

Give your homemade biscuits added ‘bite’ and extra fibre using hemp seeds! Empty a pack of Koopmans biscuit mix into a mixing bowl, and add some butter and a few tablespoons of hemp seeds (shelled or unshelled). Prepare the dough according to the instructions on the packaging, fashion into biscuits using a cookie cutter, and then place onto a baking tray. Bake briefly in the oven and your hemp seed biscuits are ready to enjoy! Hemp seeds are not only an ideal ingredient in biscuits; they’re also delicious in Dutch pancakes, apple crumble tart and freshly baked bread.

Oer-Hollandse ontbijtsmoothie met chiazaad (traditional Dutch breakfast smoothie with chia seeds

A smoothie is an exceptionally filling fruit and vegetable drink that can be rustled up in a blender in a jiffy… so, perfect for those who are particularly short on time in the mornings! This quick and easy to prepare Dutch breakfast smoothie with chia seeds is guaranteed to keep you going until lunchtime: place one cup of buttermilk, 3 tablespoons of Brinta, 1 tablespoon of chia seeds, 1 banana, a pinch of cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of pouring syrup into a blender. Process until smooth and creamy, pour into a large glass, and enjoy!
