Lekkerbekjes (battered fish)

Visit any fish stall in the Netherlands and you’ll quickly discover two Dutch favourites: verse maatjesharing (fresh herring) and lekkerbekje (battered fish). And for those of you who don’t benefit from a Dutch fish stall in your neighbourhood – happily you can still rustle up lekkerbekje at home using our simple recipe below.


4 fish fillets (whiting, hake or cod)
100 g of flour
1 egg
2 dl of milk
Salt and pepper

Dutch recipe for lekkerbekjes


First take a large bowl, add in the flour, egg, milk and salt and pepper to taste, and mix into a lovely smooth batter. Next heat a frying pan, generously coat the fish fillets in your batter and fry in oil for around 5 minutes or until golden brown. Delicious served with French fries, French fry sauce and a crisp mixed salad.
