Hachee (beef stew)

This authentic recipe for Dutch stew is just like grandma used to make and guaranteed to evoke warm memories of Holland!

Ingredients:

600 g of stewing beef
5 onions
50 g of butter or margarine
1 cube of beef stock
2 tbsp. of flour
2 tbsp. of vinegar
2 bay leaves
4 cloves
A splash of red wine
Salt and pepper

Dutch recipe for hachee

Preparation:

Dice the beef, sprinkle with salt, pepper and flour and then cut the onion into chunks. Next heat the butter or margarine in a frying pan and fry the meat until golden brown. Now add in the onions and fry for a further few minutes. Next add ½ litre of water, the stock cube, vinegar, red wine, bay leaves and cloves (alternatively use a packet of Honig stew mix in place of the individual herbs). Bring the mixture to the boil, cover and leave to stew for approximately 3 hours. Serve with new or mashed potatoes and warm red cabbage.
