If you’re familiar with Dutch breakfasts, then you’ll know that when it comes to the first (and arguably most important) meal of the day, you’re utterly spoilt for choice in the Netherlands. For in addition to a variety of delicious breads and rolls, you can also choose from an almost endless selection of traditional Dutch favourites such as ontbijtkoek (breakfast cake), knäckebröd (crisp bread) and beschuit (rusk-like biscuits), all topped generously with typical Dutch products, including Dutch cheese, chocolate sprinkles, chocolate flakes, Dutch jams, apple syrup, peanut butter and more. Indeed, there’s so much variety that many struggle to choose and end up combining two or more of these yummy treats in one. Discover some of the most popular and certainly most unusual Dutch sandwich topping combinations below!
Apple syrup with cheese
You might not think that sweet and savoury toppings are an ideal match, especially at breakfast! However, the much-favoured combination of Dutch cheese and apple syrup tastes surprisingly good. If you don’t believe us, try spreading your bread or rolls liberally with Dutch apple syrup, top with a few slices of your preferred Dutch cheese and we guarantee that you too, will be hooked! If you don’t have any Dutch cheese in your fridge, then replace with cheese spread – many Dutch swear by this alternative.
Peanut butter with sambal
If you enjoy a particularly spicy “kick” to your meals, then you’ve just got to sample this fiery variant of the classic Dutch peanut butter sandwich! Coat your chosen bread or roll with lashings of authentic Dutch peanut butter and then smear with a small quantity of sambal to finish. Yum!
Sausage spread with chocolate sprinkles
Another strange, yet tried and tested sweet and savoury pairing in the Netherlands, is sausage spread and chocolate sprinkles. First apply a generous amount of sausage spread to your bread and then crown with a decadent layer of chocolate sprinkles for unexpectedly tasty results!

Who doesn’t love chocolate or cheese? We all know that they’re a match made in heaven in cheesecake, and now you can marry the two at breakfast for an extra special treat! Cover your bread with a tempting layer of chocolate spread and top with a few slices of your favourite Dutch cheese for a delicious Dutch breakfast with a difference!
Peanut butter and cheese
Of course, you can infinitely combine a range of savoury toppings, such as cheese and ham. However, if you’re vegetarian or fancy something a little out of the ordinary, then you’ll need to experiment. Try smearing your selected bread or breakfast rolls thickly with peanut butter and garnish with a few slices of mature Dutch cheese. For an even more exciting twist, add a touch of sambal. Delicious!

If, like many, you simply cannot decide on your choice of topping, why not plump for them all?! First spread your bread or roll liberally with peanut butter, follow with an indulgent layer of chocolate spread and then a final coating of blueberry jam, for the ultimate breakfast time feast.
