It goes without saying that an extensive selection of typical Sinterklaas treats is absolutely central to a successful Sinterklaas celebration. But how can you get your hands on all of your favourite Sinterklaas goodies if you live abroad? Of course, you can always buy traditional Sinterklaas products from an online Dutch supermarket such as Holland at Home, or alternatively, you can have a go at making them yourself!

pepernoten recipe

250g of self-raising flour
250 ml of honey
1 egg
1 tbsp. of speculaas spices
1 tsp. of ground aniseed

Place all of the ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix thoroughly into a smooth dough. Next cover the mixing bowl with some plastic wrap and place into your refrigerator for one hour. Meanwhile preheat your oven to 200 C. Once the dough is sufficiently chilled, sprinkle a little flour onto a clean work surface and cut the dough into long strips. Now cut the strips into small cubes and pop onto a pre-greased baking tray. Place the baking tray into your oven and bake the pepernoten for about 15 minutes, or until a delicious, golden brown.

Sint schuimpjes

3 egg whites
375g of icing sugar

Preheat your oven to the lowest setting possible. Beat the egg whites in a mixing bowl and sprinkle in 2 tablespoons of icing sugar. Beat the egg whites thoroughly once more and then add in the rest of the icing sugar. Next, grease a baking tray and cover with individual tablespoonfuls of the foamy egg white mixture. Bake the Sint Schuimpjes for around 2 hours and leave to cool on a wire rack before serving.

350g of peeled almonds
500g of icing sugar
1 egg white
2 tsp. of orange blossom aroma

First soak the almonds in water for a few hours. Next remove their brown skins and finely grind in a blender. Place the ground almond into a mixing bowl and stir in the egg whites, icing sugar and orange blossom aroma until you get a lovely creamy, yet firm mixture. Cover the mixing bowl with plastic wrap and pop into your refrigerator for a few hours to set. Once the marzipan is ready, knead in some colouring of your choice and shape into festive Sinterklaas figures.
