Ontbijtkoek (Breakfast Cake)

Learn how to make this delicious Dutch favourite in your own kitchen!

250g of self-raising flour
2.5 dl of milk
100 grams of brown sugar
5 large tablespoons of honey
2 tsp. of cinnamon
2 cloves, crushed
½ tsp. of nutmeg
A pinch of salt

Preheat your oven to 160 C. Take a cake or bread tin and grease it with butter. Sift the flour and place into a bowl along with the cinnamon, ground cloves, nutmeg and a pinch of salt. Stir in the brown sugar, honey and milk until a smooth mixture forms. Pour the mixture into the cake tin and cover with a sheet of baking paper that has been greased with butter. Place the pan on the bottom shelf of your oven and bake for 45 minutes. Next take the cake tin from the oven and remove the baking paper. Place the tin back into the oven and bake for a further 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow the ontbijtkoek to cool before removing from the cake tin and cutting into slices. Finally, generously coat each slice with butter and serve.
